Tracking Your Little One’s Big Moves

From the moment your baby is born, they are on a beautiful journey of growth and discovery. One of the most exciting parts of this journey is watching them develop motor skills—the movements and coordination that lay the foundation for crawling, walking, and eventually, running into your arms! 💕

Here’s a helpful month-by-month guide to the key motor skill milestones your baby might reach in the first 6 months of life.

👶 Newborn to 1 Month: First Movements

At this stage, your baby’s movements are mostly reflexive—but every little stretch and wiggle is a big deal!

Gross Motor Skills:

  • Moves head side to side during tummy time
  • Arms and legs move in jerky, reflexive motions
  • Begins to lift head briefly when lying on stomach

Fine Motor Skills:

  • Keeps hands in tight fists
  • Grasps your finger when placed in palm (palmar reflex)

Tip for Parents: Tummy time for just a few minutes a day helps strengthen those little neck muscles.

🌼 2 Months: Getting Stronger

By 2 months, your baby is beginning to gain more control and coordination.

Gross Motor Skills:

  • Pushes up slightly with arms during tummy time
  • Holds head up a little longer
  • Smoother arm and leg movements

Fine Motor Skills:

  • Starts opening hands
  • Tracks moving objects with eyes
  • Bats at nearby toys

Encourage with: Soft hanging toys and gentle arm and leg movement exercises.

🌟 3 Months: Head Control & Exploration

At 3 months, your baby becomes more alert and active in exploring their surroundings.

Gross Motor Skills:

  • Holds head up steadily
  • May roll from tummy to back
  • Pushes up on elbows during tummy time

Fine Motor Skills:

  • Brings hands together at midline
  • Reaches for toys
  • Grasps objects when placed in hand

Play idea: Use textured toys or rattles they can hold and shake!

💫 4 Months: Rolling and Reaching

This month brings more mobility and discovery.

Gross Motor Skills:

  • Rolls from tummy to back (and maybe back to tummy!)
  • Pushes down on legs when feet touch a surface
  • Sits with support (lap or cushion)

Fine Motor Skills:

  • Swipes at dangling toys
  • Brings objects to mouth
  • Improved hand-eye coordination

Watch for: More confident movements and joyful giggles during play.

🌈 5 Months: Building Balance

Your baby is growing stronger and may start to balance while seated.

Gross Motor Skills:

  • Rolls both ways
  • Pushes up onto arms when on tummy
  • Begins to sit with little or no help

Fine Motor Skills:

  • Transfers toys between hands
  • Reaches purposefully for objects
  • Explores textures with hands and mouth

Helpful toy: Teething rings, soft balls, and baby-safe mirrors.

🌟 6 Months: Sitting Up and Grabbing

This is a milestone month for many babies!

Gross Motor Skills:

  • Sits without support for longer periods
  • Rocks on hands and knees (pre-crawling)
  • Bears weight on legs when held upright

Fine Motor Skills:

  • Uses a raking motion to grab small objects
  • Bangs toys together
  • Reaches and grabs with accuracy
